Everyone's Space
featuring Scott Bakula Grade Levels 6-12 Running Time: 17:00 minutes
Teachers Guide included on Dvd
Host Scott Bakula (of Star Trek and Quantum Leap) shows how competition drives innovation—even in space exploration.
In the 1960s, the intense rivalry between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. fueled the Space Race, culminating in Neil Armstrong’s “giant leap” in 1969. The near future seemed to hold great promise for commercial space flight and space tourism.
But in the intervening years, NASA’s accomplishments have been underwhelming.
Now, the most exciting innovations are found in the private sector, where the Ansari X-Prize contest inspired enterprising teams to race toward the goal of developing a cost-efficient, reusable space craft.
The X-Prize was modeled after a similar prize that helped launch the commercial aviation industry—a $25,000 prize won by American Charles Lindbergh with his famous 33-hour solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927.
Today, the budding private space tourism industry is attracting entrepreneurs, investors, and would-be adventurers who hope to be among the first private space travelers. Thanks to the power of competition, the dream of safe, affordable space flight may be realized in the not-too-distant future.

"The World Needs You. Volunteer!"
asks students to examine, within themselves, the volunteer spirit that is at the heart of Lions Clubs International. The video, Down the Street and Around the World, highlights several Lions clubs projects from "around the world" and the personal stories of the people who have benefited from them.
This unit offers much more than just the video. It features a detailed educator's guide which will:
help you introduce the concept of service and volunteerism to your class or youth group, help your students recognize the value of service to themselves as well as others, and help you supervise a successful volunteer project for your entire class or group or for one individual student.
Also provided are worksheets designed to help students evaluate where their interests and talents might best be served as a volunteer and to decide about and plan for a successful volunteer experience.
"Share Your Vision" includes a 10-minute video, entitled New Glasses, New Life, that tells the true story of a weaver in a small rural town in Mexico. As he ages, his eyesight begins to fade and he is concerned that he may no longer be able to weave and support his family.
The video shows how eyeglasses, collected by students and adults in the United States, help the weaver and others like him in his village to see and live better.
This program provides the basis for an excellent service project with great cross-curricular potential for upper elementary, middle or senior high school students. The kit includes an 8-page teacher's guide, classroom poster plus activity sheets. The teacher's guide provides guidelines on how to conduct an eyeglasses recycling program, and offers lesson plans about the eyes and their care. It also explains the benefits of volunteerism and provides activities for students to learn about developing nations.
A Journey Through Our Eyes - An Interactive Program About Eye Care and Eye Safety
Sponsor: American Optometric Association
Grades: 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade
CD-ROM Educational Program
Vision is a miraculous and intricate process – something most of us take for granted.
Eye problems and concerns should not be thought of as being limited to older people. About 12% of American children under five have clinically significant vision problems. One in four children from five to nine years of age has vision problems, and it is estimated that over 150,000 school children suffer eye injuries each year.
The more young people know about how their eyes work and what kind of regular care the eyes need, the more likely they will be to practice eye safety and preventive eye care throughout their lives.
The activities within the program have been designed for students ages nine through 13.
They encourage independent research, critical thinking, reading, and written and verbal communication.
