What are charter schools?

They are public schools but without the brick and mortar building.

Most of them offer free curriculum, computer, copiers, free high speed internet they usually send this as a reimbursement, and a reimbursement of physical education classes usually up to the $75 amount.

How do they offer this for free? They use the tax money that the public schools receive if your child is with them. More is listed below on this subject.

Funding: A community school is funded:

by the state through per-pupil foundation payments;

by additional funds from grants, government and private services;

by state start-up grants for developers with preliminary agreements;

by the Public Charter Schools Grant Program through the US Department of Education.

Benefits

National Statistics

Charter schools are nonsectarian public schools of choice that operate with freedom from many of the regulations that apply to traditional public schools. The "charter" establishing each such school is a performance contract detailing the school's mission, program, goals, students served, methods of assessment, and ways to measure success. The length of time for which charters are granted varies, but most are granted for 3-5 years.

At the end of the term, the entity granting the charter may renew the school's contract. Charter schools are accountable to their sponsor-- usually a state or local school board-- to produce positive academic results and adhere to the charter contract. The basic concept of charter schools is that they exercise increased autonomy in return for this accountability. They are accountable for both academic results and fiscal practices to several groups: the sponsor that grants them, the parents who choose them, and the public that funds them.

For the legal definition of a charter school in a particular state, consult that state's charter school law through our State Profiles area.

We also provide a sampling of other charter school Definitions. To find research on charter schools, visit our Resources area.

Benefits

The intention of most charter school legislation is to:

Increase opportunities for learning and access to quality education for all students

Create choice for parents and students within the public school system

Provide a system of accountability for results in public education

Encourage innovative teaching practices

Create new professional opportunities for teachers

Encourage community and parent involvement in public education

Leverage improved public education broadly

People establish charter schools for a variety of reasons.

The founders generally fall into three groups: grassroots organizations of parents, teachers and community members; entrepreneurs; or existing schools converting to charter status. According to the first-year report of the National Study of Charter Schools, the three reasons most often cited to create a charter school are to:

Realize an educational vision

Gain autonomy

Serve a special population

Parents and teachers choose charter schools primarily for educational reasons--high academic standards, small class size, innovative approaches, or educational philosophies in line with their own. Some also have chosen charter schools for their small size and associated safety (charter schools serve an average of 250 students).

Be careful in choosing, ask specific questions from what I told you about above.

Be forthright and honest with them about your child and remember they can't turn you down for admittance they are a PUBLIC school. Some problems with Charter schools are the teachers sometimes don't get back to students with a grade or they don't keep the parents informed.

Speak up for your child and yourself. Call the director of the school if you aren't getting answers.

There are many charter schools and some are very different from others so you do have to check them out and see whats right for your child.

You do have to return the computers and books if you don't stay with the school.

Here are some others for you to check out for yourself:

Didlet is an acronym for: Digital Infrastructure for the Distance Learning of Engineering Technology Our University knows how difficult it can be for home school parents to provide their children

with the computer skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers. We have therefore decided to offer a free online computer class to home schooled students in Ohio who are 14 or older and the class is based on a course we teach to freshman and post-secondary high school students.

The course is called "ETEC1302 Computer Systems: Gateways to Cyberspace" and the class uses a series of free eBooks called "The Professor and Pat" series.

I will be teaching this course and the books are available at the following website:

http://www.professorandpat.org

These books were written by Ted Kosan and he is one of our faculty members. He is also a home school father and the books have been designed so that they are easy to use by home school students.

If you are interested in this course, more information about it can befound on this website:

http://www.etec1302homeschool.info

No college credit can be given for the course since it is free, but students will still receive useful knowledge and skills by taking it.
